BATON ROUGE- The regional police K-9 trials have officially started. The dogs are tested on obedience, agility, and suspect and evidence search.

This morning, News 2's Rebecca Buchanan went out to Olympia stadium to learn more about the competition.

Tomorrow will begin the suspect apprehension phase of the regionals. The dogs will be judged on their ability to track down and subdue a running suspect.

"The reason we send the dogs in the first place is because this is a violent guy, possibly armed," said Corporal T.J. Morse. "If he wanted to fight some more and hurt the officer or possibly hurt someone else, the dog would react."

The competition will be open to the public tomorrow. The USPCA regionals will go from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Olympia stadium in Baton Rouge.
