Jump Start Your Heart Valentine's Gala
BATON ROUGE - Valentine's Day is coming up, which makes this the perfect time to start thinking about your heart.
You can save lives, raise awareness of sudden cardiac deaths and have a great time at Jump Start Your Heart's Valentine's Gala. Donna Lee and Danielle Kelley joined us on 2une In this morning with all the details.
"There are so many athletes who aren't aware of the heart problems they have," Gala Committee Member Donna Lee explains. "
Jump Start Your Heart was created following the death of a promising high school basketball player in Baton Rouge in 2008. An undiagnosed heart problem took Shannon Veal's life instantly.
"What we're screening for is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy," Kelley told News 2's John Pastorek. "We provide EKG's and looking for...an enlarged heart and arrhythmia, but unfortunately that's not part of the screening for routine physicals."
If the issue is caught early, it is preventable.
"We don't want a student-athlete to die, which is what can happen in some cases when you have an enlarged," Kelley went on to say. "But a lot of things can be corrected where they can still play sports."
The Valentine's Gala is this Saturday, February 7th from 7:30 - 11:30 p.m. At the Renaissance of Baton Rouge (7000 Bluebonnet Blvd.). Watch our interview with Donna and Danielle, visit the Jump Start Your Heart website or call (225) 751-8684 for more information.
