Inmate dies at Livingston Parish Jail
LIVINGSTON - A Livingston Parish jail inmate is dead after an altercation with deputies, according to the sheriff's office.
Sheriff-elect Jason Ard said Darrin Norton, 35, was booked into the jail Saturday on charges of criminal trespassing, damaging property and resisting arrest.
Ard said Norton began acting strangely, and medical staff requested he be moved into a padded cell. A struggle started and two deputies were hurt. Norton later died.
Ard said the only thing deputies used to subdue Norton was a chemical spray.
An autopsy is under way to determine the cause of death, but the coroner said in their preliminary findings Norton's death wasn't related to the struggle.
