Improvements coming to St. Helena Parish schools

GREENSBURG - The ailing school district in Saint Helena Parish is getting a fresh start thanks to a property tax passed in November.

The school district is renovating the high school and elementary buildings after years of neglect. It's the first renovation of the schools since they were built in the early 60s.

The property tax is a 25.8 millage. 16.4 of that will go towards salaries and 9.4 will go to renovating and building new schools.

Superintendent Kelli Joseph said students will see a difference as soon as the start of school.

"They're going to go into a new space. Everything is going to be brand new, be conducive to learning. They're going to feel a since of pride in their school and the community will feel a sense of pride in their school," Joseph said.

The district is also working on plans to build new schools. There's no timetable for the construction yet.
