Immigration reform is good news for some area families

BATON ROUGE- Immigration reform could impact some 65,000 immigrants living in Louisiana.

Tuesday, the President asked Congress to move forward with a bill to overhaul the system. It would be the pathway for 11 million undocumented people living in the U.S.

"Having these members of my family in that status giving them that opportunity is more than a blessing for all of us," said Elvin Calderon.

Calderon is from Honduras and now lives in Baton Rouge. He just became a citizen last week, but has family members who are not citizens.

It's welcome news for others, too. People listening to La Nueva 105.5 in Baton Rouge phoned the station, sharing their hopes.

"They're really happy about it." said D.J. Jamie Cerreto.

"You got the invitation, you can stay here and you can do whatever. Work... stay... and that's huge," he said.

Reforms would allow people already living here to become citizens faster. Those people would have to have a background check, pay fines and back taxes, and learning English.
