How to keep your New Year's resolutions

BATON ROUGE - As the calendar page turns into a new year, many people are thinking about making resolutions to better their lives. But the trick to keep those resolutions, is setting yourself up for success.

Some of the top resolutions include losing weight and getting fit. Health experts at the YMCA say becoming a healthier person is a lifestyle change.

"Many of us feel as if we don't give 100 percent of ourselves every single day, that we're not achieving anything," said personal trainer Jason O'Connor. "I would say, just come in, create the habit, and over time, you'll grow."

One of the biggest mistakes people make is expecting immediate results.

"Take things one step at a time," said YMCA Branch Executive Kevin Broussard. "You don't do it alone, and you get your family involved in this."

Your resolution should be something you can keep track of, whether in a journal, calendar or app. The more specific the resolution, the more likely you will follow through. If you want to lose weight, pick a specific amount you want to lose, and set aside time to achieve your goals, and if you find yourself straying, find a buddy.

"See if there's somebody you can work out with," said Katherine Green. "Find an instructor you like and team up with them, make them hold you accountable."
