How do they make the Wisconsin cheese heads
MILWAUKEE – Just two hours away from Green Bay, Wisconsin’s famous “cheeseheads” are made.
While the material used to make the cheesehead looks like actual cheese, you certainly wouldn’t want to eat it.
Aside from the signature Green Bay Packer’s green jerseys, the cheesehead is the signature headgear for Lambeau Field faithful.
“The demand for them this time of year is high, especially with the season right around the corner,” Mario Busalacchi said. “Keeping up with it is tough, but we manage.”
Even though they can only make eight at a time, Busalacchi says they make tens of thousands of cheeseheads every year. He says thats enough to stretch from New York to California, approximately 2,500 miles.
It was an idea that was a hit from the start.
“That lightbulb kind of went on in his head. It was like, ‘it would be a cool idea if we had a cheesehead hat,’” Busalacchi said.
Back in the 1980s, owner Ralph Burno was at a Brewers game when some opponents heckled him for his cheesehead hat. That idea turned into a million-dollar idea.
“He ended up making his first one out of a couch cushion. He wore it the next day to a baseball game and from there he kept rolling with the idea. Almost 30 years now it has turned into what it is today," Busalacchi said.
Not too bad for a $20 piece of foam, and an idea to show team spirit.
