House rejects Edwards bill to lessen income tax deductions

BATON ROUGE - Lawmakers in the Louisiana House have spurned a proposal sought by Gov. John Bel Edwards to scale back a tax break for people who itemize deductions on their state income tax forms.

The bill would have raised $88 million to lessen budget cuts next year.

With no debate, 55 House members voted Sunday night against the bill by Bogalusa Rep. Malinda White. It received 46 votes of support.

The proposal, rewritten on the House floor, would have ended a person's ability to deduct their state income taxes and state and local sales taxes. They still could deduct medical expenses, home mortgage interest payments, charitable contributions and other items.

The House and Senate have passed $220 million in taxes in the special session, far below the $600 million sought by Edwards.
