Home invasion in Donaldsonville results in death

DONALDSONVILLE - A Donaldsonville man is dead after being tasered by an Ascension Parish Sheriff's deputy.

Chief Deputy Tony Bacala said around 4 a.m. Thursday morning, Charmin Bennett dove head-first through a closed glass window of a home in D'ville Village and landed on a man and a woman who were in bed at the time.

The man armed himself with a stick while the homeowner called 911. At the same time, the homeowner's son armed himself with a hatchet and held Bennett at bay until deputies arrived.

When deputies arrived on scene, they attempted to take Bennett into custody but said he resisted.  Deputies then used a taser on Bennett, but said he "shook it off" and pulled off the metal probes shot by the taser.  After continued resistance a second deputy deployed a taser, then handcuffed Bennett.

Bacala said Bennett indicated to EMS he was under the influence of cocaine, and was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.  Bacala said while on the way there Bennett lost consciousness and went into cardiac arrest, then died after efforts to resuscitate him.

Bacala said Bennett was arrested in the past for attempted rape, multiple burglaries, a number of disturbing the peace charges, resisting arrest and theft.  His body was taken to the coroner's facility for an autopsy where toxicology testing will be conducted and medical cause of death determined.
