Hero rescues drowning boy
GONZALES - Today, a sheriff's deputy who saved a young boy from drowning said he did what anyone would have done in the situation.
Sergeant Chad Stafford said he heard the child screaming from across the apartment complex he was patrolling, ran about 75 feet to find the two-year-old drowning in a pond.
He said he ran along the bank, jumped in, and was able to pull the boy to safety.
"The child was approximately five, maybe six feet away from the bank," Stafford said. "When I jumped in, I don't know how deep the water is, but when I jumped in I remember my face going underwater. And I didn't feel the ground until I swam toward the bank."
The child's mother was located with the help of a neighbor and he was returned to her uninjured.
