Heavy police presence at firework show

BATON ROUGE - Expect a heavy police presence at Saturday's fireworks show in the downtown area as a "zero tolerance" policy will be enforced for criminal activity.

With the stricter enforcement in effect, even misdemeanor crimes could end in arrest.

Over 100 officers will be at the July 4th event including mounted patrols, plainclothes officers, and air surveillance. Law enforcement will use cameras, microphones and night vision technology to monitor the crowd.

A portion of River Road in downtown will be shutdown beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday. Fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m., however festival goers are encouraged to arrive two hours early to avoid traffic delays.

Alcohol will be sold in designated areas at the festival, but attendees are not allowed to take their drinks outside those areas. Ice chests, BBQ pits, tents, and pets are not allowed in the festival area.

Groups will not be allowed to linger after the show ends, and law enforcement intends to clear the area quickly. Individuals are encouraged to report suspicious or criminal activity to police.
