Health insurance deadline looms

BATON ROUGE - The deadline to enroll in a health insurance plan is fast approaching and already insurance agents are seeing a boom in the number of people rushing to sign up.

"Right now I'm working seven days a week, and the thing that's really frustrating about that is the website is not working, this weekend I had 22 people sign up and out of the 22 I was able to get seven of them," said Larry Koenig, an insurance agent.

Koenig said the website has not had nearly as many problems as it did during the initial rollout, but enough that he can't get to all the people that need help in a timely manner.

"Instead of taking 30 minutes to enroll someone, often it will take two hours, sometimes several days to get to it," said Koenig.

It's why he thinks the Obama administration should roll back the deadline to give people a chance to sign up, before they lose out.

"They think, 'Well, I can just go somewhere else, I can go to Blue Cross or Humana, or something like that, and get it later on,' but no you can't if you don't get it by March 31st, you can't get it anywhere, you won't be able to get it until the middle of November," said Koenig.

Federal authorities have been firm, saying the deadline won't be extended, though they may consider allowing some extra time for people who start the process before the end of the month and run into problems.
