Handicapped parking moves for LSU football game day

Related Story

BATON ROUGE - Gameday parking for the disabled is moving twice as far of where it was last season.

The "M" lot had 125 spaces available on a first come first serve basis. LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director Herb Vincent said the Alex Box Stadium West lot provides more than 200 spaces.

"It gives us the opportunity for a lot more spaces out there for disabled patrons, and we can dedicate a lane of traffic before and after the game to run a shuttle back and forth," Vincent said.

From four hours before kickoff until everyone is brought back to the Alex Box west lot, four large Tiger Trails Transit buses will bring fans from Alex Box to right in front of Tiger Stadium. In the past, one shuttle was dedicated from Lot "M" to the stadium through large crowds, and at times the band and Mike the Tiger, which wasn't feasible.

"When you're in the middle of campus here behind the assembly center, it's just a much more difficult route for a shuttle to run," Vincent said.

LSU is in full compliance with what the Department of Justice mandates for handicapped parking. The statute says there must be one disabled parking spot for every 100 spots.

Parking officials estimate there are around 15,000 gameday spots, and the Alex Box west lot has more than 700 with more than 200 dedicated for the handicapped.
