Ground broken on final phase of I-12 widening
DENHAM SPRINGS- The last phase of I-12 widening broke ground today, with one catch; the expansion will stretch even further than originally planned.
The phase between Juban Road and the Walker interchange came in $14 million dollars under budget, so that money will be used to continue the three lane expansion past Walker and near Satsuma.
"We're gonna see how far that money takes us," said Governor Bobby Jindal during the ground breaking ceremony.
The current phases of construction are slated to be completed sometime in 2012, but the third won't finish until 2013. So as the initial headache inducing construction zones disappear, the congestion will continue for nearly 46,000 drivers a day.
"You put up with the convenience for a short period of time and then for the next 30 to 40 years, you have interstate that's less congested," said Wendell Pepper, who drives the stretch of road.
The total cost of widening is nearly $170 million dollars.
