Grant to pay for renovations at Southern Lab

BATON ROUGE - Long overdue renovations could be coming to Southern University Lab School in Baton Rouge, thanks to a $1.2 million grant.

It's been over 20 years since the school received any type of renovations.

If you walk down the halls of Southern Lab, you'll notice the paint on the walls cracking, the ceiling falling, and old tinted blue greenish windows. But, change is on its way.

"I'm elated, we do need some much needed renovations," said Shandon Pitts, whose son is in the 11th grade at Southern Lab.

The money will repair old windows, install new lights for classrooms, and replace the school's ceiling.

"This is really going to be helpful to get some of those repairs that we need, of course its not going to repair everything, but it's a great start," said Southern Lab Director Dr. Donnie Harrison.

He says the school wouldn't be able to make these repairs without this money. The school receives funding from the state, but students still have to pay tuition to cover all the expenses.

"It becomes difficult to get the funding we need to do things like renovating our school like regular public schools," said Dr. Donnie Harrison.

And parents feel the students will benefit the most from the renovations.

"Schools needs to be an environment that is conducive to learning and when children have a nice place to learn in they feel proud about that," said Shandon Pitts.
