Gonzales celebrates tree lighting despite vandalism
GONZALES- Less than 48 hours after it was vandalized, the City of Gonzales celebrated its annual tree lighting Tuesday evening.
Someone tore down Christmas ornaments and damaged the ladies restroom located at Jambalaya Park on East Cornview Street. City workers spent Monday morning putting everything back in place. Barney Arceneaux, the mayor of Gonzales, praised workers for their quick work.
"Our workers did a wonderful job getting everything back together on the Christmas tree, and everything just fell into place," Arceneaux said.
The city provided jambalaya and hot chocolate during Tuesday's event while people enjoyed Christmas carols in the park. Arceneaux says more than 2500 people were in attendance. Candace Martinez, who attends the event every year, said it was great for the city to be able to unite after the August flood.
"It's good for the community to get together especially after the flood and then the vandalizing," Martinez said. "It's a good thing they were able to fix it."
Gonzales Police are investigating but no arrests have been made.
