Gay marriage licenses almost everywhere in La on Tuesday

NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana is changing the lines labeled "bride" and "groom" on its marriage licenses to "bride/spouse" and "groom/spouse" to accommodate same-sex marriages. But same-sex couples don't have to choose who is bride or groom.

Holly Vining, president of the Louisiana Clerks of Court Association, said Tuesday they can circle the word they want or mark out the other. She notes that those are record copies, not for display.

Vining says each clerk also gives the couple what some clerks call "the pretty copy." She says those differ from parish to parish.

In Webster Parish, where she's clerk of court, the certificates will just have each person's name.

Louisiana began issuing licenses to same-sex couples Monday, three days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that marriage is a fundamental right.
