Future of some downtown buildings in question
BATON ROUGE - A shuffle of government agencies in East Baton Rouge Parish will leave two buildings unoccupied, but questions remain about their future.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office and Department of Public Works are both leaving the building they shared on St. Louis Street behind the district courthouse. The sheriff's office is already open for business in their new location by the airport, while DPW is in the process of finalizing their move into the city hall across the street.
Meanwhile, the Baton Rouge Police Department is in the process of moving into the former Woman's Hospital, which will leave their current offices on Mayflower vacant.
What happens next for those buildings isn't totally clear. The former sheriff's office and DPW building will be demolished, but there aren't any funds set aside at the moment. The former police department, a state-owned historic building, will revert to the state's control but no plans have been announced for its future.
