Funeral procession nailed with red light tickets
BATON ROUGE- A funeral procession driving with a police escort to a cemetery was hit with multiple red light tickets when the procession was ushered through an intersection at Coursey and Cedarcrest.
"We had two police escorts on motorcycles, we all had our flashers on and we were in a caravan procession going through and I think I even slowed down driving, but your supposed to go through the red light, so I went through," said Ruth Harb, who was attending her mother-in-law's funeral.
Harb tried to contact the city to get the ticket thrown out, but was forced to mail in a reason to contest the ticket.
"I sent a copy of the program from the funeral and it had the time on there of when we were going on the procession and I sent that along with it and told them we were in a funeral procession," said Harb.
But the city wouldn't accept that, saying she did not have supporting documentation and telling her she was still expected to pay the ticket.
"This was a sad occasion, we had friends supporting us and they were also ticketed for the same event," said Harb.
Once News 2 started digging into the blunder, the mayor's office returned calls, saying it would request a review of the tickets and adding that things like this have happened before. The mayor's office said a police officer is supposed to review each violation, but in this case, that officer wasn't able to determine that the so-called violations, should likely have been thrown out.
There's still no word on if Harb and her friends will have to pay for the tickets they got because they attended a funeral.
