Friends, family fill basketball court to honor drowning victim
ST. GABRIEL - A community remembers a teen for his personality, the love he had for his family and his favorite sport.
As night fell on Tuesday, a pick-up game takes over the basketball court where Malcolm Calloway loved to play.
"I just played basketball with him the night before," said teammate Jayden Reddit.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office says Calloway drowned on Sunday while swimming with friends in the Parks of Dutchtown Subdivision in Geismar.
Friends say Calloway played basketball nearly every day.
"He's always one of the first ones out here, and the last one to leave," said his friends.
The 17-year-old made plans to play basketball Sunday night but never made it to the courts.
Tuesday night nearly 200 people gathered to show their support. Friends say he had big goals, and was always striving to make his mom, Carla, proud.
"He meant a lot to this community," said Coach Lester Joseph.
His nick-name, "Mac Smoove," for his smooth demeanor, is memorialized on the courts and backboard.
Calloway's funeral is Saturday at 11 a.m. in Sunshine.
