PEARLAND, TX - Baton Rouge native and former pro-baseball player Darryl Hamilton was killed in what has been reported as a murder-suicide outside Houston.

Police were called to Hamilton's upscale home about 14 miles south of downtown. The Houston ABC affiliate, KTRK, posted on its website, police were dispatched by a third party about a disturbance at the home. Officers found Hamilton, 50, dead near the entrance and Monica Jordan, 44, dead in another area inside the home.

The couple had a 14-month-old who was also there at the time. The toddler was not hurt and was turned over to child protective services, the station reported.

Investigators believe Hamilton was shot multiple times and Jordan had a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It was revealed later Monday that the pair were going through a custody situation involving the child. Last week, the couple reached an agreement where Hamilton was going to pay Jordan $1,300 per month beginning in August.

"The whole thing is sad to me," Hamilton's attorney Gary Zimmerman told KTRK.

"He was a very sweet father, he was always playing with his kids outside," a neighbor told the TV station.

"I don't know how a human being can do this kind of thing," another person said.

Hamilton played for various Major League teams from 1988 to 2001 after attending U High in Baton Rouge and Nicholls State University in Thibodaux.

"It's just unbelievable," John Granato, a radio personality and Hamilton's friend, said.
