Former BR mayor says keep police chief appointed

BATON ROUGE- Former Baton Rouge Mayor Tom Ed McHugh says he personally thinks the police chief's job should remain appointed by the mayor.

McHugh says there can be challenges created when two different leaders are fighting over city money. McHugh says the mayor is held accountable for most issues, including crime, and he believes the mayor should have some oversight authority without micromanaging.

Some city leaders have called for a change to the police chief position due to the controversy involving Mayor Kip Holden and former Police Chief Dewayne White. White was fired earlier this week after being appointed by Holden two years ago.

People we spoke with around town support electing a chief. Ginger Bailey says the chief should be elected like the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff. Vickie Naquin says the people should be involved in the choice.
