Football brings welcome distraction to Denham Springs

Related Story

DENHAM SPRINGS- The Denham Springs High School football team met Tuesday night to discuss the upcoming  season. Residents are hoping the return of football will bring a much needed distraction, after 75% of Livingston parish was damaged in last week's flood.

"On September 9th it's not going to be about what comes up on that scoreboard," Principal Kelly Jones told players Tuesday. "If you guys are together as a team, and you come out of that locker room, that's the biggest victory that the community and the city of Denham Springs will experience ever."

The school was severely damaged in the flooding and students still aren't sure where they'll be attending classes in the months to come. But in the midst of all the uncertainty, coaches promised that when the football season returns, so will a sense of normalcy.

"Sports are a way to bring people together," said Coach Dru Nettles.

Now, the school is trying to get equipment before the season starts. Denham High's athletic department has reached out to equipment vendors as well as to LSU about borrowing equipment. School officials told us the university is currently petitioning the NCAA to allow the loan.
