Flyers could see harder security checkpoints

BATON ROUGE, La. - If you're planning on flying next year, you may have a harder time getting on a plane.

The REAL ID Act requires several documents that properly identify a person. As of now, Louisiana Driver's Licenses do not meet those federal regulations which went into effect ten years ago.

Last year Governor Bobby Jindal rejected a legislative answer to the Act, citing privacy concerns. The response would have allowed people to get the new ID card if they wanted.

"You've got to get the original birth certificate. We need your social security card. We need to put that in a database, you know people are fearful of that," said State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson. "Who has access to that? Who can pull that information? Those were questions that the federal government could not answer."

The ACT takes place in commercial airports in 2016, and flyers could face stricter security checkpoints as early as next Summer.
