Flu safety tips and Ebola concerns

Related Story

BATON ROUGE - According to a local pediatrician, the United States health care system is too advanced for Ebola to spread like it has in West Africa.

Dr. Mindy Calandro says she is much more concerned about the flu than an Ebola outbreak. Unlike the flu, Dr. Calandro says Ebola is spread by contact with the bodily fluid of someone who is currently showing symptoms of the virus.

Dr. Calandro's main focus is fighting the flu and other respiratory illnesses that pop up around this time of year. She recommends anyone six months of age and older should get a flu vaccine.

The vaccines are available as a shot or a nasal spray. Children who are receiving their first flu shot need two doses that are 28 days apart.
