Fired community center director appeals termination

BATON ROUGE - The recently-fired director of the Jewel J. Newman Community Center in East Baton Rouge Parish presented his side of the story to the parish attorney.

Carl Slaughter and his attorney Jill Craft met to discuss why he should be reinstated after Metro Council member Chauna Banks-Daniel called for his firing.

Slaughter, who's been at the center for 34 years, said the firing was political fallout because his brother opposed Banks-Daniel in the last election. She denies that, telling News 2 Slaughter ignored her requests to fix issues at the center, which was shut down recently due to fire code violations.

Slaughter hired attorney Jill Craft to represent him, who questioned whether Banks-Daniel had the authority to fire her client, who is a civil servant.

Banks-Daniel plans to meet again with the parish attorney to explain why she wants Slaughter gone.

It's unclear when he will find out his job status.
