Fire union president accused of violating probation

Related Story

GONZALES- Shane Spillman, the President of the Baton Rouge Fire Union, appeared in a Gonzales courtroom Thursday after his probation officer filed paperwork to have his probation revoked.

Spillman was arrested for a second offense DWI last year. When he was picked up, the Investigative Unit discovered he had an active bench warrant for his first DWI for failing to appear in court.

Spillman pleaded guilty last year and was supposed to follow numerous conditions. Some of those included: attend a victim impact panel, community service and pay a monthly supervision fee. Court paperwork filed to revoke his probation shows he violated those conditions.

In court today, his probation officer told a Judge after the hearing was scheduled she had time to meet with Spillman and he satisfied some of those conditions.

Spillman didn't want to say anything as he entered and exited the courtroom.

However, Mothers Against Drunk Driving attended the hearing and had plenty to say about Spillman's legal issues.

"We hold people especially law enforcement and firemen to a higher standard because they should know better," Asheba Brown said.

Spillmans troubles began in 2009 when he was picked up for DWI. A judge signed a bench warrant in 2011 when he failed to appear in court. Last year, he pleaded guilty to his second DWI arrest.

He's due back in court at the end of May.
