Fire Protection Changes- AROD

BATON ROUGE-  The Baton Rouge Fire Chiefs' Association got the thumbs up from Metro Council today for a plan to consolidate nine unincorporated fire districts in the parish.

Council asked for the report in September.

It outlines closing some stations, building new ones, adding equipment and personnel.  The move is said to equal fire protection in the rural areas across the parish and, over time, lower insurance rates for homeowners in those areas.  The chiefs say it will cost a lot to start, and that's what's held up the process in the past.  The report doesn't outline the cost to implement the plan this time around, or how long it would take to put in place.

However, council expects to give the go-ahead to research those aspects, and the effects on firefighters in two weeks, in hopes of having those answers by June.

The plan does not include the fire departments in the City of Baton Rouge, the City of Baker or the City of Zachary, but Central is included.
