Fire disrupts paradise
THREE RIVERS ISLAND - It took first responders about 20 minutes to get to a home engulfed in flames Sunday morning.
The home is located on Three Rivers Island along the Diversion Canal. It is a golf cart community in Livingston Parish, but the bridge to get there begins in Ascension Parish.
Since the community is located on parish lines, the St. Amant Fire Department backed up Livingston Parish Fire Districts 8 and 9.
The community does not have its own fire or emergency protection services. It often takes between 20 and 45 minutes for help to arrive- a big concern for St. Amant Fire Chief James LeBlanc.
"Nobody really pays attention to this, until there's an emergency," he said.
LeBlanc's volunteer department responded with its fire response boat. The boat was purchased recently to fight fires along the Diversion Canal. The St. Amant fire department said it is happy to help assist in emergencies, but there is a concern about the next time, which could be worse.
"People continue to build these beautiful homes and people are buying them," said LeBlanc. "It's just a concern to me that the further they go, the more trouble we're going to have trying to give them medical care."
Three people were sleeping in the home when it caught on fire. They were alerted to the fire by a boater, who saw the flames. Fire responders believes the fire likely sparked by a golf cart connected to an electrical outlet.
The Three Rivers Island Homeowners Association recently went before the Livingston Parish Council to work out a plan to secure an emergency response boat. So far, that plan is in the beginning stages.
