Final flood debris pickup for Denham Springs begins Monday

DENHAM SPRINGS - The final collection of flood debris in Denham Springs is set to begin Monday.

Over the weekend, residents in Denham Springs geared up for the first day of the final pass of debris removal. The debris pickup crews will be hitting the streets starting Monday morning.

The guidelines are fairly simple, as the crews will pick up anything that was flooded but no new construction materials.

For some residents, like Rusty and Darlene Brown, the final debris pass comes as a bittersweet goodbye. But it also means new beginnings.

“That's the remains of our home from the 80's, all in that pile,” Rusty said, referencing the massive debris pile in their yard.

The couple, married 45 years, raised their three children and grand children in the house.

“It’s 30 years of memories, of my children's bedroom, their kitchen where they sat at the bar and fixed meals, where they played games, our grand children, Christmases... Its lots of memories,” Darlene said.

One of the more difficult parts of the process came when Rusty had to demolish their historic 100-year-old home after nine feet of flood water destroyed the residence that sat right off the Amite River.

“Well, it was kind of emotional for a little while, Rusty said. "But then I took the tractor to it and let her go down.”

The demolition came after getting the proper permits. And with the final debris pass starting Monday, the Browns knew it was their chance to get some help.

For debris to be picked up, the homeowners need permits for removal and for Right of Entry permit to allow the crews to come on the property.

"It’s for different hazards, overhead lines and trees, and they have contractors come in and they will pick this up,” Rusty said.

The permits can be found on the City of Denham Springs website as well as at the City Hall.

The debris removal pass will conclude on August 12th.
