GRAMERCY - A centuries old bonfire tradition lighting the way for Papa Noel along the Mississippi River is getting more explosive than ever.

"I don't think we wold do this in California at all," first time spectator Ashley Kim said.

About a hundred bonfires along several miles of the river in St. John the Baptist and St. James parish ignited the area's Christmas Eve tradition.

This year's celebration was highlighted with not only bonfires but also fireworks.

"I saw the biggest bonfire I've ever seen and it looked like exploding TNT," Ciara Lytle said.

Lytle is referring to the bonfire covered in half of a million firecrackers.

"Its so much fun for the community to come together. The guys spend weeks building the bonfire, and we get to come out and watch it happen," Jade Leblanc said.
