FEMA teams assess damage in EBR parish

BATON ROUGE - Today FEMA spent the day assessing hurricane damage in East Baton Rouge and St. Martin parish to determine if people can get individual assistance.

The teams will survey conditions and present a report to Washington and Governor Bobby Jindal. The governor could then officially request individual aid based on the report.

Today, FEMA drove through the harder-hit parts of East Baton Rouge assessing damage.

"Basically this is a quick assessment, just to record the amount of damage that was done to home owners.. It was minor or major or even destroyed homes," said FEMA representative Ray Perez.

Some people say they could really use the help.

"It definitely fell at a bad time, so any help is appreciated," said Kyle Palmer.

FEMA said it could take weeks or even a month before a ruling on the federal disaster declaration.
