BATON ROUGE - Relatives of a toddler killed last night when a gun accidentally went off spoke to News 2 about the pain it's caused their family.

Police arrested Terrance Varise, 18, in connection with the shooting death of his brother, Travin Varise, Monday evening. Investigators said Terrance accidentally killed his two-year old brother while handling a gun in their home.

"The brother came running out of the room with the baby saying, 'not my little brother, not my little brother,'" said family member Tina Jason.  "You could see the worry, the fear, the hurt, the pain, all that, I mean he loved his brother to death, so I know he's going through it right now, I know he is."

Varise was also charged as a felon in possession of a handgun, which means he should have never had the weapon in the first place.

"Nobody loves him different, it was an accident, it was a foolish accident, but a lesson to be learned," Jason said.

Now the family wants more to be done to help curb gun accidents and eliminate weapons from the street.

"They should be taken off the streets, no one should have them unless they have a license, because they have innocent kids that lose their lives to guns," said Jason.
