Family of 9 loses everything before Christmas
BATON ROUGE - A family of nine is holding strong after a fire destroyed their home over the weekend.
Shanita Johnson, her husband and seven kids made it out of their Blake Street home as it burned early Sunday morning.
"We got out the house, and that was it, it was that quick, I didn't think, all I could think about was getting my children out, getting my family out of the house, that's all I could think about," said Johnson.
She thinks the fire started near her cars and then spread to the home. She says the house is a total loss.
The blaze also took Christmas presents she had stored away for her seven children.
"We lost everything we got for them, but everything like that can be replaced, but we can't replace any of our lives, so at the end of the day, we're here," said Johnson.
Now Johnson and her family will spend the holidays with family members until they can rebuild their home. But she said she already knows her Christmas wish has been granted.
"My children and my husband, our life, and that right there, that's our Christmas gift, being alive," said Johnson.
