Families spending hundreds for Thanksgiving meal

BATON ROUGE - According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, to feed a family of 10 this Thanksgiving, all you will need is a $50 bill.

That only includes the necessities: a 16 lb. turkey, carrots, rolls, whipping cream, stuffing, whole milk, sweet potatoes, canned pumpkin, pie crusts, fresh cranberries and peas.

Depending how you shop and what makes up your holiday meal, $50 might barely cover the turkey.

"If you could do that at home for $5 a person and get a full meal, maybe that's not so bad," said shopper Howard Dennis.

Evelyn Pickens is feeding her family this Thanksgiving, and just her turkey cost $30.

"Fifty dollars? No, That's not accurate," said Pickens. "For Thanksgiving? You spend more than that for Thanksgiving."

This year the United States experienced its worst drought in decades, creating concern about food prices. Not much has changed except the price per pound of turkey, up almost four cents from last year.

Many people spent between $200 and $300 to feed their families.

"Soft drinks, tea and wine, those kinds of things are a part of that," said Robert Blanche. "I'll probably spend $300 before it's all said and done."
