Exposed gravesite repaired after News 2 investigation

BATON ROUGE - A grave in Clinton is now repaired after the remains of a woman were found exposed.

It's a story News 2 has been following up after our investigation got state officials involved. The cemetery is known as Hickory Nut. It's located off Highway 961 on Rist Road.

Since our story aired a few weeks ago, the disturbing find got the attention of the state. As cement was mixed Tuesday and then paved over a woman's tomb, it was a grateful moment for Frederick Boyd, who found the grave site open to the air a few weeks ago.

"It still shows that someone cares and to me that's all that mattered," said Frederick Boyd.

At the time, the bones had been exposed for more than a month and nothing was being done.

"This person once lived and we take care of our loved ones when their living, and it's our job to take care of them once they've moved on also," Boyd said.

Based on our story, the Attorney General's office launched an investigation and made contact with those that manage the cemetery.

"We went up to the cemetery with the remains we had recovered, put them back in the same place where they found them and waited there while they cemented over the existing hole," said Assistant Attorney General Ryan Seidemann.

Although the cemetery grounds are well-maintained, state officials said there have been request from cemtery operators and legislators to look into changes within the law on how to deal with rundown and abandon cemeteries.

Boyd, who often walks through the cemetery, said he's glad both he and the people buried there are now at peace.

"That peace is definitely back, restored, and I thank God for that and everyone that pitched in to help," he said.

The AG's Office also says the cemetery managers will eventually build a new vault for that tomb to avoid problems in the future.
