EXCLUSIVE: mom says son has PTSD

BATON ROUGE - The mother of a man who pulled a gun in a Subway store last week says he is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Gerri Hobdy says the veteran soldier has been formally diagnosed with PTSD, and his actions last week were a cry for help.

"He was not himself, obviously," Gerri Hobdy said. "He tried to get help."

Police say Daniel Hobdy, 29, faces armed robbery charges after he waived a gun demanding a sandwich, and took off on foot. He didn't make it far before police caught up with him.

Hobdy's family says he began experiencing PTSD symptoms shortly after he returned from Iraq in 2011.

"Nightmares, anger management issues, being very touchy, not able to concentrate," Gerri Hobdy said.

Hobdy says her son went through a traumatic experience and is grateful police recognized her son's cry for help and hopes her son's actions will shine light on a dangerous situation.

"Hopefully we will unmask behavioral health issues, and provide the kind of assistance, people need so they won't put themselves, or those officers, in that kind of position," she said.

This week, law enforcement around the area are meeting to learn new techniques aimed at recognizing mental health disorders.
