EMS changes wanted in Gonzales
GONZALES- The EMS service provided by the Gonzales Fire Department wants to out source its medical billing to save time and bring in more money.
The service has been in place for seven years and doesn't charge Gonzales residents for ambulance care by recouping costs from insurance companies instead.
The billing is currently done by one person in the EMS department, but they said it's a daunting task.
"It's a very time-consuming, very difficult process. You deal with medical coding, and medical coding is usually outsourced by whoever does it, whether it be a doctor's office, whether it be a hospital, whether it be an ambulance service," said Fire Chief Tracy Normand.
The fire department asked for the switch to a third party medical billing company earlier this year, but was turned down by the council.
The EMS service is expected to be a hot topic during the council meeting this evening.
