Employees waiting to be paid after car lot closes
DENHAM SPRINGS - Employees at a used car lot in Denham Springs are still waiting to be paid after the lot closed earlier this week.
Red Barn Motors at the corner of Pete's Highway and Hwy 16 locked its doors today. Employees said they received paychecks for a past work week, but claim they're owed much more.
"I'm looking at about $3,000 and then another $3,000 for the following month," said Jacqueline Dilley, a salesperson on the lot who's waiting on commission.
After a brief meeting it was clear not every employee got what they were due. One worker recorded owner Don Richardson as he handed out checks.
"We're handing out paychecks, that would normally be put in your bank account today, we're handing those out this morning, and for the hours you worked this week, we'll have your paychecks next Friday, no employee will not get paid all that they're due," said Richardson over the recording.
Still, most of the employees are left without a job and without a way to support their family.
"I'm angry, upset, mad, I mean I understand what they're going through, but I have a family, I have three children that I'm trying to take care of, I understand they're going through problems that has nothing to do with us or our family issues," said Shannon Barker, who told News 2 the reason for the closure was because of health problems.
Richardson told News 2 as he drove away that he would pay everyone the rest of the money they're owed next week.
News 2 checked with the Louisiana Used Motor Vehicle Commission, and found the company does not have any open complaints against it.
