EBR Substitute Teacher fired for pulling student\'s hair at school

BATON ROUGE - A substitute teacher in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System has been fired over allegations she pulled a child's hair after a confrontation while she was at work.
The incident occurred last Thursday at Westdale Middle School.
According to the girl's mom, Shonta Edwards, she was contacted to pick her daughter up from school last week after a run-in with the teacher.
"I went over to the school and asked them, what is going to happen," Edwards said "How do I know she is going to be safe? She can go to another school and do this again."
Edwards recorded that conversation where Principal Jeremy Couvillion told Edwards the sub would no longer have a job after the incident.
"It's unprofessional, it's over the line," Couvillion said to Edwards. "I'm pissed off too. I've already called human resources. She won't be back here. I've already banned her in the system."
What the video doesn't show is what happened before the confrontation occurred. In statements given to administrators from the substitute teacher and the student, both of them told administrators the student was told to go to the office, but didn't comply with the substitute teacher's commands.
The incident occurred just outside of a classroom. The sub reportedly told Taniah Edwards to go to the office after she didn't sit down. Edwards said she's already had discussions to obey teachers in class, but believes the sub should have kept her cool.
"I was a sub before, and I would have never done something like that," Edwards said. "I wouldn't want anyone to do that to anyone's child. My husband was a coach for years, and he was equal with all kids. He never put his hands on them, and spoke to them like their parents would speak to them."
The East Baton Rouge Parish School System declined to do an interview today due to testing this week. However, a spokeswoman issued the following statement:
"The substitute teacher involved in the physical confrontation at Westdale Middle School was banned from substitute work in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System following an investigation into the incident. She no longer serves as a substitute at any EBRPSS school."
