EBR School District hosts job fair

BATON ROUGE - Summer is winding down for the East Baton Rouge School District and with the start of a new year comes the need for new teachers.

"We're having a late summer job fair for our late resignations and for vacancies. We have a feeling there will be new students coming into the district. We have large enrollments in some schools," said Millie Williams, with EBR schools.

The district is looking to fill about 60 teacher positions.

"We're looking for math teachers, science teachers, specialized teachers, English and elementary teachers," said Williams.

School closures along with restructuring displaced more than 500 teachers. District officials believe the shortage comes from other districts recruiting EBR teachers.

But this impromptu job fair has the Louisiana Association of Educators concerned.

"I do wonder why we're having the job fair. I do know we still have some displaced people. I'm hoping they will be included in this job fair," said LAE president, Debbie Meaux.

And feels this could affect students.

'We have a lot of openings that need to be filled and it's does say to me that our children are probably going to be not getting what they need right away," said Meaux.

But the school district disagrees.

"We have a great substitute system so we have over 1000 applications in our substitute system. So we will have classes filled. However the reason we're having the job fair so we can have the teachers in the classroom."

The job fair will be Saturday from 9 to noon at the Instructional Resource Center on South Foster Drive.
