EBR school board to discuss layoffs in strategic plan

BATON ROUGE- The East Baton Rouge Parish School board is discussing ways to improve teacher effectiveness as part of their strategic plan for the 2013 school year.

        > UPDATE: Thursday night, the school system approved a plan that would mean the district's worst teachers could be fired.  First, bad teachers will get training.  If the training does not help them improve they will be "automatically dismissed."  More on this on WBRZ News 2 at 10:00.

"It's totally absurd, it's hardly even discussed any more as a reputable theory about education, let alone any business," said Steve Monaghan, the President for the Louisiana Federation of Teachers.

Monaghan thinks the idea is bad, not only because of the evaluation system, but also because it puts all teachers in an uncomfortable position.

"We're seeing flocks and flocks of teachers leave before their time, tired of it, they've had enough, they've had enough basically because of things like this," said Monaghan.

Craig Freeman, who represents the District 6 for the school board, thinks the recommendation is too draconian, and wants to see more help for struggling teachers.

He said he hopes the plan "is something that will say we can work with those teachers at the bottom to move them up and if they aren't willing to do that then we need to move them out," said Freeman.
