Eat healthy for National Nutrition Month
BATON ROUGE - It is the third month of 2015, and many people have already forgotten their New Year's Resolutions. March is National Nutrition Month, which makes it the perfect time to get back on track.
Courtney Brock, the Director of Pennington Biomedical's Research Kitchen and research dietitian Renee Puyau stopped by 2une In Thursday morning to show you some healthier breakfast options to what you are consuming each morning.
Some people enjoy eating a bowl of cereal and milk each day, but many are high in sugar and low in fiber. A good alternative is oatmeal with peanut butter and a banana.
"It's going to cut your sugar in a third of what you had with the cereal and increase your fiber times six," Puyau explains."It's going to keep you full all morning. You won't be hungry again after an hour.
Another popular breakfast item is sausage, egg and cheese biscuits. Many times, the biscuits are high in saturated fats. Instead try a mini-quiche and lightly-buttered piece of toast. You're cutting your saturated fat, while keeping the protein of the egg and adding fruits and veggies in the tomato and spinach quiche.
Bagels with cream cheese are an easy, go-to breakfast for a lot of people. By simply trading that bagel for a wheat English muffin and your cream cheese for Laughing Cow cheese, you can nearly cut your calorie intake in half.
Brock believes breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and people make common mistakes that can easily be avoided.
"Don't skip breakfast," she told News 2's Kylie Dixon. "My go-to breakfast for anyone on the run is a smoothie. If you can't do anything else, at least make a smoothie. You can make those ahead. On our website, we actually have some smoothie recipes."
