Dump the Pump Day
BATON ROUGE- Thursday is the 10th annual Dump the Pump Day, which means bus fare is free for the Capitol Area Transit System. Today residents throughout the area are taking advantage of the free bus rides.
The free rides began ten years ago when gas prices were soaring, and some people didn't have enough money to get to work. Gas prices are down from what they were in 2005, but the commute to work can still get pricy for some. A strong public transit system is an important factor in keeping people employed and above the poverty line.
The public transportation system in Baton Rouge has struggled in the past. Funding and route availability problems have persisted throughout the years. The people working to change that reputation say it's the community's responsibility to make sure public transportation remains a priority in Louisiana.
To participate in Dump the Pump Day all you need to do is show up at a CATS bus stop and hop on a bus. You can find information about bus routes and arrival times here.
