Drone spooks high school football crowd

BATON ROUGE - Federal laws may have been broken after someone flew a drone over Memorial Stadium Friday during a packed football game.

People watching the game between McKinley and Scotlandville took pictures of the drone, which circled the stadium after flying in from Scenic Highway.

Mary Triplett was inside the stadium and said she saw the flying object sweep overhead and fly low over the crowds.

"It came into the stand... we were horrified," she said. "I looked at the crowd. I don't know if it was hundreds or thousands of people. I looked at the exits... And I kept thinking, well I'm handicapped, and I couldn't move fast."

East Baton Rouge Parish School officials told News 2 today the drone did not belong to McKinley or Scotlandville.

"I want whoever did this to take responsibility," Triplett said.

She was particularly rattled after video surfaced this summer of a drone floating around, firing a weapon. Other drones have made headlines in recent weeks by disrupting college football games, and even crashing the U. S. Open.

Tonight, others in the stadium were also concerned after witnessing the drone circle the stadium.

"Scared me because it was going around and no one knew what was going on," Elijah Williams said.

The Federal Aviation Administration prohibits such drones from being flown over stadiums or populated areas. People who operate such drones could face civil penalties or criminal charges.
