Drivers doubt end is near for LA 73 work

PRAIRIEVILLE- The construction on LA 73 is nearing an end as the contractor begins working on the roadway.

The $15.5 million dollar project was expected to be completed last year, but the deadline was extended because of utility problems and weather delays.

"It's been going on and on and on," complained Murthy Duvvri. "It's to the point where we can't get our services here anymore."

The post office confirmed Tuesday they stopped delivering mail to residents along Highway 73 due to the construction.

"The utility work and the sewer work is definitely something that complicated this project," said DOTD spokesman Rodney Mallett. "That's been completed, now they're moving forward with completing the roadway where they're going to widen it and put in a center turn lane."

DOTD says the work should be completed by the summer, but there's some curb and cutter work left to do, as well as some paving.

Drivers aren't confident, though, in the new end date because of previous delays and say they're sick of waiting.

"Getting in an out of the subdivision is a problem, water being retained on the streets is a problem," said one resident. "I told my son he's going to graduate high school before this is finished."

The project is expected to make the road safer by widening the stretch of highway to three lanes, including a center turn lane.
