Displaced families speak out after apartment blaze

Related Story

BATON ROUGE - Families are left picking up the burned pieces of what used to be their homes.

Four families are displaced after flames took over their apartment complex on Sherwood Meadows Drive, Wednesday evening.

"The apartment's on fire, the apartment's on fire." Kevin Dukes told News Two someone screamed at him to vacate his apartment.

He made it out just in time.

"And then when I came outside and as I walked down the walkway, the windows out of apartment B just blew out," said Dukes.

Dukes said his 11-month-old baby wasn't at home at the time and he's grateful.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department arrested John Akbar for setting the blaze. Authorities said Akbar started the fire on his back patio with a cigarette lighter.

"He made a bad decision and his bad decision cost everybody, four different families, everything," said Dukes.

Dukes said he thinks it's out of character for Akbar to have done something like that.

"He kind of minds his business. He's not the type of person that's a troublemaker or anything like that," said Dukes.

The Red Cross is helping out some of the families.
