DHH promises changes after audit

BATON ROUGE - Louisiana's health secretary, Kathy Kliebert, says her department will recoup all of the money improperly paid to private companies to oversee Medicaid services for 1,700 people after they had died.

An audit released Monday by Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera's office found the Department of Health and Hospitals paid nearly $1.9 million last year through the state's privatized Medicaid programs for deceased people who couldn't receive services.

Kliebert says DHH has shifted from using federal Social Security records to the state's own vital records to crosscheck enrollment, to ensure that people are removed from the Medicaid rolls when they die.

She says her department will recoup the money by deducting it from future payments to the private companies who are managing Medicaid medical and behavioral health services.
