Detectives: website linked murderer to victim

Related Story

ST. GABRIEL - Detectives believe the website backpage.com linked a murder victim to the man investigators say killed him.

Jason Mascarella, 36, is charged with second degree murder for killing Roderick White, 33.  How he did it is what investigators call "heinous, violent, and twisted."

Detectives said White drove from his home in North Baton Rouge to Mascarella's mobile home in St. Gabriel Sunday night after they met for the first time on backpages.com.

That is when investigators say Mascarella shot White inside the mobile home, then stuffed White's body into White's own car, drove it to the levee in Baton Rouge near Gardere Lane, and torched it.

White's body was so badly burned that investigators could not identify it without the help of the LSU Faces lab.

But Mascarella did not stop with burning White's remains, police said.  Fire investigators found Mascarella's home scorched Monday night.  Deputies tell News 2 they believe Mascarella set his home in flames to hide the evidence of White's murder.

Deputies will not say what the motive was for White's murder, but they did say Mascarella's charge could be increased to first degree murder if a jury sees fit.

Mascarella has a history of violence, according to deputies.  A search of records at the East Baton Rouge Parish Court Clerk's Office shows Mascarella has been arrested in the past for rape, drugs, and drunk driving.
