Deputies: Teens burglarize Bayou Corne homes evacuated by owners
BAYOU CORNE - Two teens got locked-up and the Assumption Parish Sheriff says they targeted the elderly.
"These are two knuckleheads that really deserve to stay in jail a really long time," Sheriff Mike Waguespack said. "In this situation, neighbor should be looking out for neighbors but these neighbors chose to take advantage of neighbors who were no longer home or at the residence."
Tuesday, deputies arrested Billy Gros, 18, and a 14-year-old juvenile who live near the sinkhole. The suspects live a few doors down from their victims.
"One lady was out of town having surgery," Waguespack said. "One item in particular that was sentimental to this homeowner was her mother's wedding ring and it was passed on to her we were able to make that recovery, interesting enough the eighteen year old who stole the ring actually gave it to his girlfriend."
Everything's back with the rightful owners.
Nearby homeowner Nick Romero claimed the victims often helped the suspects.
"These people don't have a conscience," nearby homeowner Nick Romero said. "That's why some people don't want to leave because you have too much to lose and you can't expect the sheriff's department to be everywhere all the time."
Gros is being held on $20,000 bail. The 14-year-old is in a juvenile detention center.
